About Houston Heights
A large conglomeration of smaller neighborhoods just northwest of downtown Houston, the Greater Heights area was first developed as a streetcar suburb to give residents easy access to downtown. Today, the freeways and side streets allow for a quick drive downtown or to the Galleria, Montrose, or the Memorial City area where retail and restaurants await Heights residents.
However, why leave your neighborhood when the Greater Heights area offers laid-back eateries, antique stores and resale shops, small-town shopping districts and big box stores, and some of the city’s best pubs and coffee houses. Continually undergoing gentrification with both new construction and home renovation, the Greater Heights area is a mix of housing styles where you will find original Victorian mansions and brand new reproductions of Victorian homes mixed in among large new homes and older, small bungalows alike.
Schools in the Heights
The Greater Heights area has been providing education to local children since 1894 when the first elementary school opened in the Heights. Served by Houston Independent School District, the area includes six elementary schools – Crockett, Field, Harvard, Love and Sinclair, as well as Helms Community Learning Center – and two middle schools – Hogg and Hamilton. Heights High School and Waltrip High School are the two public high schools that serve the area.
Heights Restaurants
The Greater Heights area has become much more of a culinary destination for visitors over the last 15 years. Once the home of taquerias, Tex Mex and barbeque, as well as fast food chains near the freeway, restaurants in the area now serve casual American fare, Cajun, and Texas comfort food.
